Lulu walks out of the screen. She gathers substance and voice, picks up the microphone and whispers her song in our ears.
Starting points: Frank Wedekind´s play ´Erdgeist´ (Earth Spirit, 1895) and the film by G.W. Pabst ´Lulu - Pandora´s Box´ (1928/29) which established the face-symbol of Louise Brooks. Next stop: the 1993 performances in Greece, where the silent movie and music-in-situ existed side by side. It was this relationship of picture and sound, screen and stage, silence and music, past and present, myth and subversion that shaped the dialogues on this album.
Open routes and embraces through time…
Sakis Papadimitriou, Thessaloniki, March 1996

A new album by Sakis Papadimitriou, one of Europe´s most important improvising musician.
The album stems directly out of Papadimitriou´s work with films in the last few years.
A series of performances in Greece from 1990 onwards helped Sakis to refine the concept of what he calls music in situ, where musicians improvise to a silent movie.
The 1993 performances in Greece were based on the famous film DIE BÜCHSE DER PANDORA (1928/29) by German director G.W. Pabst. It was this film which established Louise Brooks´ stardom as actress and made her face (and hair cut) an icon. The fascination with the archetypical character of Lulu provided the main inspiration for this album. (…)

It is first and foremost an album of songs based on the film, sung exquisitely by Georgia Sylleou. (…)
Twelve variations on a timeless love song serve as a point of departure for the listener´s own imagination and evoke an atmosphere of sublime beauty and rare tenderness.

Review
THE SONG OF LULU is moving beyond the wings of time and place. Formally, it is the live soundtrack of a well-known, classic silent movie. Normally, it is a whole different story: a series of moving duets that goes beyond any specific musical drama or action, a personal trip taking the shape of the listener´s open creative imagination… A series of evolving ´episodes´ comprising variations of an everlasting love song, (…) a kiss that expands time…
